Providing Incentives in P2P Adaptive Streaming

چکیده
Adaptive streaming, such as Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), has been widely deployed to provide uninterrupted video streaming service to users with dynamic network conditions. In this report, we analytically study the potential of using P2P in conjunction with adaptive streaming. Our focus is on how to provide incentives in P2P adaptive streaming. We first study P2P adaptive streaming under a taxation framework. Then we develop more general pricing mechanisms for P2P adaptive streaming using cooperative game theory.

P2P Streaming Systems: a Study on the Use of Advertisements as Incentives
P2P streaming systems, such as PPLive, PPStream, and TVUPlayer, have become popular services with the widespread deployment of broadband networks. However, P2P streaming systems still face free-riding problems, similar to those that have been observed in P2P file sharing systems. Thus, one important problem in providing streaming services is that of providing appropriate incentives for peers to...

متن کاملContracts: Practical Contribution Incentives for P2P Live Streaming
PPLive is a popular P2P video system used daily by millions of people worldwide. Achieving this level of scalability depends on users making contributions to the system, but currently, these contributions are neither verified nor rewarded. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of Contracts, a new, practical approach to providing contribution incentives in P2P live streaming s...
متن کاملCost-Profit Analysis of a Peer-to-Peer Media Streaming Architecture
We study the economic aspects of P2P systems. We present a cost-profit analysis of a media streaming service deployed over a peer-to-peer (P2P) infrastructure. We consider the limited capacity as well as the heterogeneity of peers in the analysis. The analysis shows that with the appropriate incentives for participating peers, the service provider achieves more profit. In addition, the analysis...
متن کاملPULSE An Adaptive Practical Live Streaming System
Live Streaming consists in distributing live media (video and audio) to large audiences over a computer network. Providing a live streaming service over the Internet presents many challenges: the application must respect the timing and quality constraints imposed by the nature of live media and by user expectations while struggling with the practical limitations due to the best effort propertie...
